Voices of Creativity

Hear the artist share his journey, challenges, and definitions of success

Kenny U Grant

Kenny Ulysses Grant is a New York City-based abstract artist who recently reignited his passion for painting after the loss of his mother in 2022. Raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Kenny was first introduced to art by his mom, and despite early struggles with substance abuse, he has now been sober for eight years. His emotional journey, paired with a desire to advocate for mental health and recovery, fuels his art. Working primarily with latex house paints, acrylics, and unconventional materials, Kenny creates bold, action-driven pieces. In addition to his artistic endeavors, he has been a personal fitness coach for 21 years and is currently pursuing a degree in Physical Education to inspire and mentor students.

Kenny U Grant: Art as Healing, Passion, and Personal Evolution

Kenny U Grant’s artistic journey is rooted in personal transformation, healing, and a continual exploration of self-expression. Despite a successful career in personal training for over two decades, it wasn’t until January 2022, after the tragic loss of his mother to a fentanyl overdose, that Grant turned to art as a way to process his grief. What began as a deeply personal outlet quickly evolved into a passionate artistic practice, revealing a journey that blends catharsis with creativity.

A Personal Challenge that Sparked Artistic Growth

The initial challenge Grant faced in his artistic journey was simply overcoming the fear of beginning. New to painting, he struggled with self-doubt, worried he wouldn’t be able to bring his visions to life. Yet, as he pushed through this uncertainty, his art became an integral part of his mourning process. What started as a personal endeavor soon blossomed into a desire to share his work with others, particularly when his paintings began to evoke powerful responses from viewers.

One of Grant’s proudest moments as an artist is the act of creation itself. He sees each work as a step forward in his healing journey, but the true satisfaction comes when someone else connects with his pieces. Despite his relative newness to the art world—he began painting in June 2022—Grant’s unique perspective and dedication to self-expression have already made an impact, and he continues to refine his style with each new project.

The Evolution of Style and Inspiration

Grant’s style, inspired by iconic artists like Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Julie Mehretu, has been compared to Pollock’s abstract expressionism, a flattering comparison for a young artist still finding his voice. Though he acknowledges the influence of these legendary figures, Grant sees his artistic journey as one of constant discovery. Each brushstroke is an exploration, and his work continues to evolve as he experiments with new techniques and personal expressions.

Despite the challenges of self-doubt and imposter syndrome, Grant has learned to trust the creative process. He has faced setbacks when his paintings didn’t come out as he had envisioned, but rather than abandoning them, he has learned to step back, give them space, and return to find the harmony between himself and the artwork. For him, art is not only about the finished piece but also about the journey of creating and the lessons learned along the way.

The Philosophy of an Artist

For Grant, success is not defined by external validation or market demands, but by the act of creation itself. “Trust the process” is a mantra that guides him as he works. His advice to emerging artists is simple: be authentic, embrace your self-doubt, and continue creating for yourself, knowing that your work may resonate with someone else along the way. In the end, he believes that true success is found in staying true to your vision and letting the work evolve naturally.

Grant credits much of his success to the support of his family. His wife, Lauren, is a major source of inspiration, while his two sons, Hudson and Cooper, fuel his creativity with their wild energy. His mother’s memory also continues to inspire his work, providing a powerful emotional foundation for his paintings.

Redefining Success

For Grant, success has transformed over time. Initially, he might have viewed it through the lens of recognition or sales, but now he sees success as the fulfillment of creating something that resonates with his inner vision. The process of capturing his ideas on canvas, the exploration of his emotions, and the connection with others through his work have become the true markers of success in his art journey.

As he continues to explore new techniques and find his own artistic identity, Grant’s journey serves as a reminder that art is a deeply personal evolution. It is not just about the destination, but the process of self-expression, healing, and discovery along the way.

The artist finds a profound sense of peace within the chaos of their paintings, where raw emotion and deliberate action coexist. Each piece is an open invitation, meant to resonate with anyone who engages with it. While the work is marked by spontaneity and energy, there is also a careful balance—controlled steps and intentional placements that shape the composition. Love, joy, and passion are infused into every stroke, creating artworks that are both celebratory and deeply reflective.

Beyond their vibrant and expressive nature, these paintings also serve as a means of personal solace. They provide a space for processing pain, some pieces embodying it directly, while others offer a refuge within it. Through this duality, the artist's work becomes a testament to both struggle and healing, capturing the complexities of human emotion in layers of color, movement, and form.
