Hear the artist share her journey, challenges, and definitions of success
Lïlï Dauphinee
Lïlï Dauphinee (b. 1984, Toronto, Canada) is a Belizean-based contemporary abstract painter whose work is internationally collected and exhibited. She has been featured in AQ Quarterly Vol. V, Gillian Bryce Gallery for Art Basel Miami 2024, West Art Collective (Manchester), Women United Art Movement, Art Mums United, GetScene, and COTFA. Her first solo show is scheduled for 2025 at Slip Gallery, Seattle. Dauphinee is also the resident artist at Itz’ana Resort & Residences and the founder of the Paint it Forward Charity Project, which has raised thousands for philanthropic causes since 2021. Dauphinee’s work, created with layers of oil and mixed media, is characterized by intricate textures and impasto techniques. Her signature tic-tac marks symbolize human connection, challenging the illusion of separateness. Rooted in themes of neurodivergence and isolation, her art explores the journey from perceived solitude to a deeper understanding of interconnectedness. By stepping back, her compositions reveal hidden unity within fragmentation, inviting viewers to reflect on the unseen bonds that weave us together.
Lïlï Dauphinee: The Art of Connection and Transformation
Lïlï Dauphinee’s journey as an artist is a testament to resilience, self-discovery, and the power of creative expression. Her work is deeply rooted in personal experience, shaped by life-altering events, cultural shifts, and a profound understanding of interconnectedness. Through her art, she explores the themes of individuality and belonging, challenging conventional narratives about creativity and success.
A Dream Rekindled Through Adversity
For Dauphinee, art was always a dream, but societal pressures and expectations led her away from it for years. Creativity found its way into her business career, where her "too pretty" presentations hinted at an artistic spirit waiting to break free. It wasn’t until a near-death experience during childbirth that she reconnected with painting—not just as an outlet but as a necessity. Seeking solace in creativity, she picked up a simple set of acrylics, retreating to her attic to heal. This period of introspection and artistic exploration led to her first fundraiser, exchanging paintings of birth flowers for donations to the NICU that had saved her son’s life. The overwhelming response set her career in motion, leading to scholarships, publications, and ultimately, a full-time commitment to art.
Challenges of Change and Reinvention
Relocating to Belize in 2022 forced Dauphinee to reexamine her artistic approach. Having previously painted boreal forest landscapes, she found herself in unfamiliar territory, both physically and creatively. The shift presented logistical hurdles—lack of professional art supplies, environmental factors, and the difficulty of shipping materials. More profoundly, she struggled with the subject matter, no longer connected to the landscapes she once captured. The transition took nearly two years, but through patience and persistence, she found her way back. This period of reinvention became a defining chapter in her artistic evolution.
Finding a New Artistic Language
Dauphinee's work underwent a transformation, shifting from impressionist Fauvist landscapes to a style that felt deeply personal and meaningful. A turning point came when she painted a piece simply to fill a space in her home. What emerged was more than just a new technique—it was a reflection of her neurodivergent identity, a realization that brought both grief and clarity. In her new works, she incorporates repeated tic-tac marks, symbolizing the deep yet often unseen connections between individuals. Through this approach, she conveys themes of unity, acceptance, and the breaking of misconceptions about separateness.
The Philosophy of Success
While Dauphinee has been published, exhibited internationally, and built a charitable initiative she is immensely proud of, her definition of success extends beyond accolades. For her, the greatest achievement is leading by example—showing her children that dreams are worth pursuing with courage and conviction. She believes that success is not a fixed destination but an evolving concept tied to growth, gratitude, and impact.
Breaking the "Starving Artist" Myth
A strong advocate for mindset over limitation, Dauphinee rejects the notion that being an artist means struggling. She challenges the narrative that the art world is overly competitive or that financial stability is unattainable. Instead, she believes that artists have the power to shape their own realities. Success, she asserts, is not about following a prescribed path but about forging one's own, rooted in passion, persistence, and a commitment to creation.
Staying True While Adapting
Navigating the balance between personal vision and audience expectations, Dauphinee approaches her work with a deep sense of purpose. She sets an intention for each piece, allowing creativity to flow naturally rather than tailoring it for marketability. By focusing on connection and unity, she ensures that her art remains authentic while still resonating with viewers.
Words of Wisdom for Emerging Artists
To those facing self-doubt, Dauphinee offers simple yet profound advice: "Make the art. Don’t worry about the rest." She emphasizes the importance of creating with the intention of giving rather than receiving, believing that true fulfillment and success come from serving one's community through art.
Lïlï Dauphinee’s journey is one of transformation, resilience, and an unwavering belief in the power of creativity. Through her work, she continues to bridge the gap between individuality and collective connection, reminding us all that art is not just about expression—it is about belonging.
